Oil Sands Developers Group Presentation

It shows some interesting information as to where we have been and where he thinks we may be going post financial crisis. This information supports what we are seeing with a significant upturn in activity in the Oil Sands.
As we come across interesting information from outside sources I will try to share them with you.

Slave Lake Fires

This is definitely not breaking news, as all Albertans know that wildfires have been burning at a record breaking rate this spring. This is having an effect on our business as some of our workers at the Suncor MNU project had to be evacuated last shift from their Joslyn camp rooms due to the proximity of the fire and ended up being transported through the night to camps near Conklin. Some of the camps in the Fort McMurray area are closed due to the fires while others are limiting the amount of rooms they are letting out in case they need to be closed on short notice. As a result C shift has not been called back to work yet. However, B shift is currently scheduled to return on May 31 and C shift is scheduled to return on June 7. Currently we are finalizing all of the details with other camps, when these details are finalized we will call our crews on B and C shift to confirm that the returns dates remain the same and the necessary arrangements are made for those individuals on C shift that had to cancel their rotation flights. My thanks to our employees who have worked many long hours diligently handling this logistical nightmare and to our crews for their patience.

While these fires have been a challenge and annoyance to us, it pales in comparison to what it has done to Slave Lake, burning the foundations from underneath many families. So it is with those thoughts in mind that I stress the importance of giving in these times of need. Unlike the tsunamis and earthquakes felt around the world this tragedy is in our backyard and as neighbors it is our duty to help.

These contributions don’t need to be monetary and can include clothing, food and other items that are so often minimalized through daily life but in times of need become the corner stone of recovery. Both the Red Cross and Edmonton Emergency Relief Services are doing their part to help in the aftermath of such loss and to support these relief efforts JV Driver has donated $10,000 to Edmonton Emergency Relief Services. I know many of you have already supported and done your part to continue “Taking Care of Each Other”. Let’s hope the wind and rain cooperate as crews fight to get wildfires across Alberta under control.

JVDU is gaining a lot of traction and its getting me really excited. Professional development is important to your career and it is important to strengthening the J.V. Driver team.  It is interesting how you can tie things like this back to Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. In this case it is a Win-Win or Habit #4 and Sharpening Your Saw Habit #7 for those of you that have read Steven Covey’s book or taken the course.

One initiative that has been on my wish list for some time is the mentorship program. Mentors can help provide guidance and coaching. They can be a sounding board, a resource for information or help direct you to other sources of information for dealing with today’s issues. They can also provide advice and counsel on your career development.

I encourage those interested in being either a mentor and/or a mentee to get involved with these types of programs.

Own Your Life

For those of you that don't know, Cara Dunser has worked at J.V. Driver Fabricators since July 2006; she came aboard as a QC administrator and quickly moved into finance where she has been since April 2007.  Cara has become interested in "Figure" competitions and although quite new to the sport recently won at a local level and therefore got to compete at a provincial level. Through this process Cara’s has discovered a passion and love for fitness and wants to share that passion with others.  As a result she approached me with a request to become the Champion of our “Own Your Life” (OYL) initiative. After reading a proposal Cara had drafted and hearing her speak so passionately about the subject, I couldn’t help but say yes.

As Cara is quick to point out documented studies have shown that some of the benefits of providing employees with health and fitness programs include:

·         Better safety statistics
·         Lower employee stress levels
·         Higher employee self esteem
·         Higher employee satisfaction
·         Higher productivity
·         Lower absenteeism
·         Fewer short and long term disability cases

Cara’s stated goal is to encourage health and wellness throughout the company including project sites. Cara has spoken at head office and imparted some of this vision.  In the short term Cara is busy building a plan for OYL.  However, this is not her plan.  While Cara has many great ideas she is seeking input from you on what things you would like to see OYL include.  In that way she’ll be able to create something effective for all of us.

This is something that I believe in and we have tried to kick start at different times to varying degrees of success.  I’d like to thank Cara for stepping forward and volunteering to take this on.  It demonstrates her dedication to our core values of “Taking Care of Each Other” and “Having Fun”.

New CHRP Designation Recipients

I’d like to take this blog to highlight another success for JVDU and congratulate some of our employees who are striving to better both themselves and their value to J.V. Driver. Rod Caroca, Brent Lazanik and Erika Maksylewicz have received their Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) designation.  In addition, Colleen Lucyshyn has successfully completed her NKE which is the first of two exams required to obtain the CHRP designation.

The HR field is constantly evolving to enhance Canadian business and workplaces. In order to be most effective, it is important that our HR staff keep abreast of changes to the industry. Through CHRP certification, our HR staff are able to send a strong message that they are up-to-date on the latest legislation, best practices and trends – and are able to provide the most effective workplace solutions.
I’d like to congratulate and commend Rod, Brent and Erika who have spent countless study hours to get this designation, while balancing the demands of work and personal commitments.  I'd also like to encourage Colleen to continue with her work toward receiving this designation. This is a success for JVDU which has supported them financially with their tuition and of course for J.V. Driver which has employees with an ever increasing skill set.
